Alabama A&M University is grieving the untimely passing of Medrick Burnett Jr., a beloved student and football player. The 21-year-old linebacker tragically lost his life in a car accident on January 15, 2023.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Burnett's family. As of February 10, the campaign has raised over $38,000 from over 1,200 donors. The funds will assist with funeral expenses and provide financial support to Burnett's loved ones.
"Our hearts are heavy with sorrow over this tragic loss," said Alabama A&M University President Daniel Wims. "Medrick was an exceptional young man who exemplified the values of our institution. He will be deeply missed by our entire community."
Burnett was a rising star on the football field, having earned a starting role on the Bulldogs' defense. Head Coach Connell Maynor described Burnett as "a fierce competitor and a dedicated leader."
The GoFundMe page indicates that funds beyond those needed for funeral expenses will be donated to organizations dedicated to youth sports and mentoring, reflecting Burnett's passion for helping young people achieve their dreams.
