On Tuesday, September 13th, at approximately 9:15 AM, the New York Police Department (NYPD) released details of a "targeted" shooting that resulted in the tragic death of Daniel P. Hilferty, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UnitedHealthcare. The incident occurred in the early morning hours in front of Hilferty's home in Orangetown, New York.

According to NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, the investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest that the shooting was a planned attack. The suspect, identified as Paul E. Kutz, 59, of Carmel, New York, was a former employee of UnitedHealthcare who had been fired in 2021.

Based on witness accounts and surveillance footage, investigators allege that Kutz approached Hilferty's car shortly after 6:00 AM and fired multiple shots from a handgun through the driver's side window. Hilferty was killed at the scene.

During a press conference, Commissioner Sewell stated that the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. However, the NYPD has obtained evidence suggesting that Kutz harbored a "long-standing grudge" against his former employer.

Investigators revealed that Kutz had been arrested in June 2022 on charges of stalking and harassing Hilferty. He was released without bail but ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Following the shooting, the NYPD launched a manhunt for Kutz. Within hours, he was located and taken into custody without incident by Orangetown police officers. Kutz was transported to the Orange County Jail and charged with murder in the first degree and weapons possession.

In a statement released after the incident, UnitedHealthcare expressed its profound sadness and condolences to Hilferty's family and colleagues.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our esteemed CEO, Dan Hilferty," the statement read. "Dan was a visionary leader who made a profound impact on our company and the healthcare industry as a whole. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

The shooting has shaken the close-knit community of Orangetown. Residents expressed shock and disbelief over the senseless violence that claimed the life of a beloved community member.

"It's hard to believe that something like this could happen here," said one resident. "Dan Hilferty was such a respected and kind man. This is a terrible tragedy."

The NYPD continues to investigate the shooting and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Commissioner Sewell emphasized that "no stone will be left unturned" in the pursuit of justice for Hilferty's family.

The targeted shooting that killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Daniel P. Hilferty serves as a tragic reminder of the potential for workplace violence and the importance of proper security measures. Employers are urged to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of their staff and create a work environment free from harassment and intimidation.
