Seahawks Bringing Back Backup QB Drew Lock On One-Year Deal
The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed backup quarterback Drew Lock to a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.
Lock's Return
Lock, who was acquired by the Seahawks in a trade with the Denver Broncos last March, started five games for Seattle in 2022. He finished the season with 1,464 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Competition at QB
Lock's return sets up a competition at quarterback for the Seahawks. Geno Smith, who started 16 games last season and led the team to a 9-8 record, is expected to remain the team's starter.
"We are excited to have Drew back," Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement. "He brings experience and a competitive mindset to our quarterback room."
Lock's Potential
Lock, a former second-round pick of the Broncos, struggled at times with turnovers and accuracy in Denver. However, the Seahawks believe he still has potential.
"We saw growth from Drew last year," head coach Pete Carroll said. "He's a hard worker and he's committed to improving. We believe in his ability to contribute to our team."
Next Steps
The Seahawks will begin their offseason program next week. Lock and Smith will compete for the starting quarterback job throughout the summer.
The Seahawks are also expected to add a quarterback in the NFL Draft. The team has the No. 20 overall pick and several quarterbacks are expected to be available at that spot.
